The Continuing Studies Programme systematically introduces you to the fundamentals, technology and management of offshore wind energy projects. Five modules - each in the focus of one in-class seminar - follow the path of a wind farm's lifecycle:

This module gives an initial overview of offshore wind energy as a whole with a particular focus on basic requirements for the use of offshore wind energy. What kind of energy source is wind, exactly? How is wind measured and a wind farm’s wind potential assessed? In terms of policies, which national and international regulatory conditions are there? According to which models is offshore wind supported in various countries? In addition to the expert input, participants will learn about project management and its tools and gain sound knowledge of resource planning, all of which will be useful for case study work, team organization and other tasks.
concerns itself with the planning of offshore wind farms and demonstrates which parameters need to be taken into account at an early stage. Again, the focus is on managing projects – this time, however, on aspects of large-scale construction projects and their complexity and risks. Further topics covered are approval, contract administration, financing and insurance. What does the approval process look like? What should be considered when certifying projects and signing contracts in multi-contracting? What are the risk requirements of insurance providers and financers?
In order to also understand the technical requirements of offshore wind farms, this module provides insights into all the technical components of an offshore wind farm: wind turbine, foundation structure, substation and submarine cable. What are the special characteristics of offshore wind turbines? According to what criteria are offshore foundation structures designed? Which concepts exist for the substation platform and internal farm cabling?
In order to understand the complex logistical processes in offshore wind energy, the focus in this module is shifted from the technical aspect of a wind turbine to the transport aspect. What restrictions exist when transporting wind turbines and foundation structures? Ultimately, how is the turbine constructed out at sea? What types of installation concepts are there? Students will gain insight into the shipping market and charter contracts. Because safety and environmental protection are key out at sea, students are introduced to HSE concept
examines the various service concepts and the constantly evolving service market. For which types of wind farms are crew vessels or helicopters appropriate? Which options for step over systems to the turbine are available and reasonable? Maintenance intervals and monitoring systems are also discussed. Technological aspects include anti-corrosion and anti-scour measures.
